12 Fashion Trends for Fall 2024 - Women Edition

With September comes fall and for a fashion boy like me, fall fashion trends. This season, I started earlier than last year to dress clients for the colder season. As soon as pre-fall fashion hit the shelves, I was asked for cashmere coats, tall boots, tweed suits and merino sweaters. Many of my regular clients know that we have to start early, in order to have what we want, in sizes we need. It is definitely not time to shop for a coat in December, as there won't be anything except leftovers.

Over the last month, I started looking at fall trends on Vogue, Farfetch, Ssense, Net-a-Porter and all my favorite designers, looking at colors, fabrics to get inspiration to style you, my fabulous clients. Not all trends are made for a David Lesage client, and it can be confusing for you to see so many things online. Sometimes these trends are not even adaptable to your lifestyle, so I thought about listing my favorites, to give you ideas of what I'll be showing you in the weeks to come. I focussed on "real" fashion as opposed to fantastical, focussing on daywear and mix-and-match seperates to do my list of trends.

Taupe-beige

The first trend is a color : Taupe-Beige. Not beige, not grey, not greige, but a bit of all that at the same time. This neutral color is everywhere as a basic color. Taupe-beige suits, sweaters, scarves, bags and even shoes. Taupe-beige is also used in patterns like houndstooth combined with black for example, for a softer contrast. I would say that taupe-beige is a great color to invest in, as it is 4-seasons and easy to wear.

Burgundy

Burgundy is everywhere. It is the evolution of the red that we've seen this summer. It is rich, it fits every skin color, it enlights the rosé in your skin and lips and has an extra elegance that red doesn't always has. Mixed with old-rose, another fall 2024 trend, or with ivory or black, burgundy is one of the top colors for the season. Use it as an accent like a bag or a boot, or go all-in, with a full suit.

Black Tuxedo

The tuxedo, the nec-plus-ultra of masculine occasionwear popularized for women by Yves Saint-Laurent in the late 60s, adds a Gatsby-like air to evening dressing. Seen literally everywhere, at Dolce & Gabanna, Khaite, Valentino, Loewe and more, the satin-lapel blazer and cummerbund are used as a way to play against formality or gender stereotypes. Mixed with jeans, over slip dresses or chiffon tiered skirts, the tuxedo jacket is on top of my list this season.

Tweed head to toe

Tweeds : herringbone, houndstooth, Prince of Wales, donegal, just to name a few, are shown in most of my favorite designer's runway. On tailored suits or as an accent on bags, hats and even shoes as seen at Gianvitto Rossi, tweed makes a strong comeback this season with intricate appliqués and embroideries for an extra luxurious feel.

Fifty shades of browns

Brown, brown and more brown. Of all the 90's trends that have made a comeback over the last year or two, brown is the strongest one and it is still here for fall 2024. From rich cholcolate brown, to caramel tones, or almost-black-brown, this color will add a cozy and sophisticated touch to your wardrobe. You'll definitely need brown pumps or boots, a bag, and probably a suit or a coat in this warm and earthy tone.

Exotic leopard

Animal prints are strong this season, especially leopard. I was never a big fan of animal prints like zebra, or snake, but leopard is the only one that I like, if done well of course. Dolce & Gabbana has the nicest leopard print in my opinion, always elegant, not too yellow, not too madame, just perfect. I will gladly suggest some clients a silk leopard blouse, a shoe, a cashmere scarf or maybe a clutch this season. I wouldn't go too overboard with a coat or a jacket or suit, let's keep it quiet as an accent.

Old rose

Old rose is always a very popular color for women as most of you like pink. It accentuates the pink tones on your cheeks and gives "une bonne mine" as we say in french, a good healthy look. Old rose is mixed with black at night or with ivory, beige and even camel for day time. Nothing beats an old rose cashmere sweater and a high waisted medium dark blue jeans for fall.

Knit sets

Knit sets are the last fashion vestige of the pandemic. Do you remember when we used to dress in soft clothes 7 days a week? The cashmere sets were the most selling fashion clothes of that era (seems like it was 10 years ago already). The Fall 2024 knit sets are a bit more sophisticated, but they are still as comfortable. Think cashmere skirt/sweater sets or pant/sweater sets. We now wear them with heels or with a blazer over it, to adapt to the 2024 office reality.

Flower power

Flowers, oh I love'em! Flower appliqués, embroidered, printed or embossed have been seen in many of my favorite designers this season. Erdem of course, on the top of my list, Prada, Magda Butrym, Carolina Herrera, and of course Oscar de la Renta are showing flowers on suits, dresses, blouses, shoes and handbags. I love this Erdem suit in houdstooth with flower print, so special that it is almost soldout everywhere in the world already.

Embellishments

Embroideries, sequins, lace inserts and flowers amongst other things, are adorning our cardigans, blazers, bags and dresses this season... and it is not only for eveningwear. A lace embroidered cashmere sweater with a jean, or an embellished blouse with trousers is one of the easiest way to wear this trend. You can also add a crystal brooch on a blazer or a cardi to revamp it for fall 2024.

Corduroy

Corduroy is seeing a comeback as well for fall 2024, especially for the weekend wear. Think a midi pencil skirt, or a high waisted pant worn like a jean with a cashmere sweater, or a blazer with jeans. These are the most common and easiest corduroy items to splurge on this season. I wouldn't suggest a full suit for the ladies, although I love a full corduroy suit for the men.

Polka dots

Polka dot is a classic pattern that was popularized around 1750s with the invention of the first sewing machine. Polka dot is elegant and chic, often associated with the French Riviera style, or Italian coast style. I've seen it in many runways this season, especially for pre-fall (June/July deliveries to stores) as it is perfect to travel. I love this print on blouses, swimwear, or dresses for the end of the summer and early fall.

Hope you like what's coming for fall, make sure to get in touch to book your fall appointment with me at info@davidlesage.com, or send me a DM on instagram so that I can show you how to style all these beautiful trends together.

David
